Marine Biology Field Trip
Science teacher Jason Donovan and ten Midland high school students will be spending part of their spring break in Monterey Bay, CA.
During this time, they will be whale watching, studying the tide pools, visiting the Monterey Bay aquarium, slough kayaking, and day-hiking in a nature preserve. Watch for future updates and photographs of this science-enrichment opportunity for our students.
Parent-Teacher Conferences - March 25
Sign-up sheets for the upcoming parent/teacher conferences are now in the office and waiting for your signature. Conferences will be held from 2:00 - 7:00pm on Thursday, March 25. Please note that we will be having a teacher inservice that morning, so there will be NO SCHOOL for the entire day.
Just Claim It 2010
Midland will be taking a group of high school students to Just Claim It 2, a presentation of the North American Division of Seventh-Day Adventists. This five-day series will take place April 7-11 in Columbus, OH, and attendance is expected to reach into the tens of thousands. JCI2 will actually encompass several events:
2nd NAD World Youth Prayer Conference
- 5th NAD Youth Ministries Leadership Summit
- 3rd NAD Ignition (Young Adults)
- Children’s Worship Festival.
In addition to the 120 hours of organized prayer, organizers have coordinated 15 workshop tracks (180 workshops), a special community mission project called "Just Make-Over," speaking opportunities for teens called "Youth Preach-Out", drama presentations focusing on Biblical prayer encounters, Biblical floats parade, and a music festival with a special feature of the 300 voices JCI Mass Choir accompanied by a 250-piece orchestra.
To ensure the JCI impact in every community, special invitations have been sent to the President of the United States, his cabinet, members of Congress, the Senate, Governors, State Legislatures, Mayors, City Councils, Community Activists, and world leaders of many nations. For more information, visit the Just Claim It website.
If you are interested in going, please contact Terri Maddux or Mary Frishman. We are trusting that God will provide for any student who desires to go. All students who want to go need to be registered and have a $50.00 deposit with their permission slip turned in to the school by March 10.
Senior Class Play - Our Miss Brooks
Midland seniors (with the help of a few other folk) have Talent, and our casting is now complete! "Our Miss Brooks", a delightful comedy (with a hint of romance), set in the 1950's, was presented to an appreciated audience this past Saturday evening, March 6.
Miss Brooks is glad that she doesn’t have to put on the school play this year; that way she won't have to feud with Hugo, the basketball coach. He might just be the guy for her and she doesn't want anything to get in the way of getting HER man. But Mr. Wadsworth, the principal, has other ideas...
We hope you didn't miss this event! Click here for further play info, a mystery-guest review, and photo gallery.
Teacher Inservice
Although there was no school for the students on February 22nd, Midland's staff were present for a continuing education Inservice. Teachers from Wichita joined with us to hear a presentation on Differentiated Instruction presented by Dr. Joseph Allison, Chair of the Department of Education at Union College.
Dr. Allison challenged the staff to teach to all students, so that all can learn. He also reminded them that students don't care how much you know, until they know how much you care. After a lunch of vegetarian hoagie sandwiches, teachers attended another break-out session with more strategies on teaching to the individual needs of each student.
Making education a positive and successful experience for each child is important at Midland Adventist Academy.
American History Comes to Life
 |
| Mr. Gene Sellow tells of growing up in the south during segregation. |
West Lenexa church member Gene Sellow spent his childhood in the segregated south during the 1940s. He recently spent two class periods sharing his experiences with Mr. Vollmer's American History class. It's another example of how Midland teachers enrich classroom learning with examples from the world outside the classroom.
Here's how some of the students responded:
- It is inspiring to know that through all he has been through, he found God.
- It was good hearing from someone who lived in that time period. He explained how life was for African-Americans, which was very different than it is today. It was great hearing from him.
- I liked his story about the guy who turned on the lights.
- I really appreciated Mr. Sellow coming in and sharing some great life experiences with us.
- He seems like an honest man, no matter what all he has gone through.
- I really liked seeing history through the eyes of someone who lived it.
